Congress to extend

The U.S. government Thursday called on the Congress to extend insurance for unemployed Americans, saying that millions of people will lose financial support without government help.

"Two million Americans in December alone -- and nearly seven million over the course of the next year -- will lose the temporary support that helps them keep food on the table and make ends meet while they search for a job if Congress fails to act," said the White House.

According to a report released by the White House' Council of Economic Advisers, without extended benefits, the U.S. would have had 800,000 fewer jobs as of September 2010, and failure to extend benefits again could cost the nation 600,000 jobs by the end of next year.

The U.S. Senate blocked the bill proposed by Democrats last month to extend the unemployment insurance.

Unemployment rate, currently at 9.6 percent, is now the top challenge that the Obama administration is facing.

Government data showed that about 8 million Americans lost their jobs in this round of recession which was officially ended in June 2009. There are about 14.8 million people who are out of work now in the country.
